Welcome to Horndal!

Horndal is a small village in Dalarna, Sweden, with around 1,000 inhabitants. Situated by the lake Rossen, about 20 km northeast of Avesta, Horndal has a rich industrial heritage rooted in iron production stretching back to 1652. The ironworks shaped the village and its identity for centuries, and that sense of community and local pride still runs through life here today.

Facilities & Services

Horndal is well-equipped for a village of its size. The village has a school: Johan-Olovskolan, covering grades F–9 with an after-school programme and a focus on culture and the arts. The school shares its premises with Kulturforum, a cultural centre that houses a theatre seating around 200 people, a library, a swimming pool, and a full-size sports hall.

In summer, Horndals Bad & Camping is a popular destination with a campsite by the water with tent and caravan pitches, a service building with showers and laundry, a child-friendly sandy beach, and the possibility to rent canoes and rowing boats.

Heritage

Horndals Brukspark preserves the historic ironworks environment, including the old estate park (likely laid out around 1776), the works office, and the bruksmuseum inside the former mess hall from 1877. The site is managed by a volunteer association and is well worth a visit.

The village also has its own church, Horndals kyrka and a cemetery.
